A Hero's funeral

This last week we left the sun and warmth of St George on Tuesday night to head up to Logan for my lovely friend Amy's husbands funeral who was killed in Iraq. The funeral from beginning to end was so beautiful and touching. The flags that adorned so many streets were a bitter-sweet reminder of the freedom we taste everyday. As we pulled into the church house for the funeral the sight of the Patriot Guard bikers holding flags surrounding the church to keep out any nuisances was a sight to be seen.

The soldiers who carried the casket did so with such grace and perfection. The Funeral service itself was by far the most faith building funeral service I have ever witnessed. My testimony of eternal families and the strength and compassion of God was strengthened beyond measure. After the service at the church we drove in the funeral procession to the cemetery. The road was lined with flags from the church house to the cemetery. As you turned on the main road to the cemetery you notice a group of students on the corner holding a sign that says "Our friend, our teacher, our hero."

If that wasn't enough to get the tears flowing again, as you turned onto the road you see the amazing sight of all of his students lining the road with their hands over their hearts.

At the graveside service there was a moment where things were silent, all but the sound of the soldiers feet bringing the casket to the vault. All of the sudden a strong wind broke out and all you could hear were flags flapping vigorously in the wind. Then, just like that it stopped. Your heart at that moment lept out of your chest. I know i didn't do the emotional depth of the service justice, but You can read about it here and you can see pictures of it here.

We love you Amy!!
P.S these pictures i took are on my camera phone while riding in the car during the procession. sorry about the low quality. Really click on the picture link, you wont be disappointed.

Amy, Thank you for sharing your experience at the funeral. I am so thankful for our brave men and women who fight for freedom and sacrifice so much for this beautiful country.
My heart aches for those families who have lost their sons, their husbands, their brothers, their fathers. May we always look for ways to serve them and comfort them in their hour of need.
