reaching out for creativeness

Lets face it, when it comes to anything crafty or even remotely using any sort of artistic eye (other than dancing) then I've got nothing. No really, nothing! But I have been blessed with spectacular friends with amazing color sense. So spectacular friends, I NEED YOU! Like I said before there is a TON of little work to be done in our fun new house, lets just start with one thing at a time...first on the list is the kitchen/great room. Please by all means take a look and start spouting off ideas. Keep in mind that we WILL paint the cabinets because they are soooo gaggy (so ideas on that needed too). We also don't want to do dark colors, we want to keep it as light and bright as possible. Also the wall color will most likely have to go throughout the house down the hall and such too. Ok there you go....what? What is that you ask? whats in it for you? Well ok ok I will let you come visit ANY time you want (and I know you are wanting too, because I saw on the news some of you guys are getting snow, and us here, well we are supposed to be back up into the mid-70's by sunday), I will even feed you, and I'll make cupcakes and if your lucky we will whip out some board games.

yeah! how fun for you! the house looks great. here's my two cents...since you asked! if you are going to paint the cupboards i would do white! i love white kitchens. the walls would look really good in restoration hardware's silver sage against white cupboards. i can't wait to see the end results of whatever you decide! good luck!

I would do an off-white distressed look with pewter hardware for your cabinets. I would also add bead board around the back and sides of the island. Rich put this up on the walls in my bathrooms. It looks awesome, kind of pottery barn look! And for stools at the island, get those black chunky swoop seat stools.
Gosh , can I just come and take over????

This is my FAVE FAVE FAVE remodel website. It'll give you terrific ideas and teach you how to do them. If I had a house, it would like like the one at this website. I start hating life just looking at it knowing I have nothing to decorate myself.

How exciting!! You have a great kitchen to work with. In any project that you spend time and money on you need to think "resell value". If the cabinets are wood and have no plastic layer to them then I would sand them down and stain them a color that you like. As far as paint goes I would stay pretty neutral and then add the colors in your accessories and furniture. You could go a shade darker in a room then what is out in your hallway. Neutrals can be funny too, some are too peach and others can be too gray. Buy a few samples and paint 12" of each color on your wall. Remember that paint is also the cheapest thing to change sometimes. Dont be afraid of color though. Expecially when it comes to bedrooms or bathrooms. If you still don't know what kind of style that you like you can always look at magazines, watch HGTV, go to home shows-and St. George has great ones. Remember that your house is yours, and can have any style that YOU like. Dress it in colors and fabric that suit you. The colors that relax you or make you feel good. Oh and Ikea has a free catolog that you sign up for online with tons of room ideas. Granted they are very contemporary and modern. I think if you pair their stuff with the right things then you can have a traditionally modern look. When you go to accessorize a room that is pretty neutral find a couple of pieces that work together to start with, a mirror, lamp, pillows, a throw, candles, vases, pottery... anything really and then use them as your start. Then every time you go somewhere just keep in mind when you have and you can slowly decorate your space. Tai Pan is also a great place to go and they also have great displays that can help you come up with some ideas. when you do a grouping it is pleasing for the eye if you do a triangle. Meaning something taller in the middle and then tapper down with smaller things on each side. For instance if you put a picture over a mantle that can be the taller part of your triangle. Then anchor each side with something shorter, like pictures or candles. Don't overwhelm yourself though. Have fun with it and start off with one project. For rooms that will have fabrics, pillows, drapes or even covered chairs, or couches.... Find those things first then the paint store can match paint to the fabric. It will save you so much time. I hope that helps, if you have any questions feel free to ask, I hope to someday do more interior design work with my dad in the development that he is working on. Good Luck!!! :)
